An aggregation of narwhals (Monodon monoceros) including males (with large tusks) and females with youngsters swimming beside them surface-synchronously in Scoresby Sound, Greenland (credit: Carsten Egevang, Greenland Institute of Natural Resources). For millions of years these high Arctic cetaceans have lived in relative isolation from human activities; however, with the loss of sea ice due to climate change, this population of eastern Greenland narwhals is now threatened by increased anthropogenic noise from shipping traffic, industrial operations, and mineral resource exploration. In this study, T.M. Williams et al. (doi:10.1111/1365-2435.14119) examine the physiological consequences of one such threat—seismic air gun pulses. Using a custom designed, submersible electrocardiographic-accelerometer tag deployed on free-ranging narwhals, the investigators monitored the reactions of the animals during quiet and disturbed periods. In the presence of noise, the narwhals’ heart rates became more variable, respiration rates increased, and swimming stroke frequency increased as the animals escaped. Together, the evidence points to high energetic and physiological costs associated with unanticipated noise that may exacerbate the environmental threats already affecting this unique polar cetacean.
