Spiral-shaped aluminum nanowires grow from scratches and abrasions on the surface of black aluminum film after heating the film in a vacuum. The growth of nanowires is driven by the stress-induced migration of aluminum atoms. The mechanism of nanowire growth is studied in article number 2100467 by Marina Romanova and co-workers. – This article belongs to the Special Section “Defect-Induced Effects in Nanomaterials” (see the Guest Editorial, article number 2200283, by Nikolai A. Sobolev et al.) in this issue.
