While it is not simplistic to arrive at a solution for the alarming issue of plastic pollution, it may be acknowledged that promoting far-reaching awareness on the concern may have some positive impact; and raising such discernment in the minds of students may play a vital role in the innovation of effective solutions. Despite having a coastline of 7500 km, it is disquieting to see a dearth of policies to regulate marine plastic pollution in India, or a lack of studies to evaluate awareness on the issue thereof. This survey was conducted among students to evaluate the awareness on plastic pollution, the prevailing attitude/behaviour regarding best practices for its mitigation, and the opinion of the surveyed population concerning existing initiatives to minimise plastic pollution. The variables of gender, educational qualification, and subject/field of study in pursuit of education were considered to analyse the aforementioned parameters. It was observed that women showed more awareness compared to men and were also more willing to adopt pro-environmental practices. Educational qualification and field of education also had a significant and directly proportional impact on the level of awareness. Regardless of adequate awareness on plastic pollution, awareness specific to microplastics was marginal. Statistically, respondents who were aware of microplastic pollution also demonstrated attitudes and behaviours that mitigate plastic pollution. Education on plastic/microplastic pollution, through structured education and mass media, along with diligent enforcement of policies and replacement of conventional plastics with eco-friendly alternatives may help alleviate the prevailing issue of plastic/microplastic pollution.
