Thermal Decomposition of Ammonium Heptafluorozirconate in Air

Abstract

The thermal decomposition process of (NH4)3ZrF7 at temperature ≥360°C in air was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-ray powder diffraction. The results show that (NH4)3ZrF7 decomposes sequentially in air at 360°C through a several-step: (NH4)3ZrF7 → (NH4)2ZrF6 → NH4ZrF5 → NH4ZrF9. Then Zr(F, O)2.706 forms due to the hydrolysis of NH4Zr2F9. While at temperature ≥ 400°C in air, ZrF4 with minor zirconium oxyfluoride quickly forms in a short time.
