Solvent extraction of titanium from ilmenite hydrochloric acid leachate: Optimization and investigation of extraction reactions of all contained metal ions

This article studies the optimization and investigation of extraction reactions of all contained metal ions during the recovery of titanium from HCl leachate of ilmenite. Firstly, the most suitable extractant is selected by comparing the extraction and stripping effects of multiple types of extractants on all metal ions. After that, the impurity metal ions coextracted could be effectively removed by studying the scrubbing of all metal ions. Then the titanium solution with purity of 99.8% is obtained. The contents of non-ferrous metal ions manganese, vanadium, chromium, and iron contained are 0.02%, 0, 0.06% and 0.03%, respectively. Additionally, the high-concentrated iron remaining in organic phase is also recovered with purity of 99.7% after stripping titanium. The species of extractant in HCl solution are characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR. The effects of H+ and Cl on the speciation of all metal ions are evaluated. The differences of the extraction capacity of metal ions are revealed in detail. Finally, the extraction mechanism of all metal ions extracted by specific extractant are proposed. The methodology described in this article may help the increase of titanium dioxide quality produced from ilmenite.
