Cultural deviation narratives reveal how individuals view the self in relation to normative expectations regarding the good life. Here, a narrative identity approach was used to examine 112 Asian American and 143 Latinx college students’ narratives about a time they deviated from the expectations of their racial/ethnic group. Personal deviations were more common among Latinx participants, whereas professional deviations about selecting a college major and career were more common among Asian American participants. Contaminated deviation narratives (positive beginnings, negative endings) corresponded with lower adjustment. Discussion centers on how cultural deviation narratives among Asian American and Latinx college students can inform understanding of the good life in these groups.
