Slotted waveguide antenna design for maritime radar system

Naval radar system suffers with false target detection problem. The important role in the radar system is played by the waveguide antenna for target detection. To reduce the false target detection probability, gain of the waveguide antenna should be increased and cross polarization component should be reduced. Objective of this research is to get the optimum gain of the designed waveguide keeping cross polarization component low. In this research narrow wall of the waveguide is chosen to reveal the characteristics of the narrow wall waveguide for target detection in naval radar system. Inclined slots are etched in the narrow wall of the waveguide these narrow wall slots are extended to the broad wall by adding semi-circular cutting at the end of the. Semi-circular cuttings are added to the broad wall of the waveguide to increase the length required for resonant which helps in achieving high gain and reduces side lobe level by reducing cross polarization component. Simulation in High frequency software simulation version 15.0 and hardware models of WR 90 waveguide with inclined slots and cross polarization component are implemented and analysed. The results of the simulated structure are compared with the hardware experimental results. Gain of 26 dB is obtained in HFSS simulation software and Hardware experimental results provides the gain of 24.5 db.
