Professor h.c. Dr. Hiltmar Schubert, founder of Propellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics and longtime director of Fraunhofer ICT passed away on December 27^th, 2020.

With this special issue on the occasion of Professor Schubert's 95^th anniversary this year, Fraunhofer ICT, the PEP board and the international Energetic Material community want to take the opportunity to remember him as an outstanding personality and his tremendous impact as a leading scientist in the field of energetics.

Professor Schubert founded the international journal “Propellants and Explosives” together with the publishing house Verlag Chemie/Weinheim, now Wiley-VCH, as a successor of the purely German-language “Explosivstoffe”, which immediately became a success story attracting scientists from all over the world for publishing their results on the title topics. In 1982, he made it into the official journal of the International Pyrotechnics Society and the journal name was extended to “Propellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics”. He guided and assisted his successors in the USA and Germany as editors to achieve his vision – to establish a modern peer reviewed journal which resulted in a reputable impact factor.

He was one of the protagonists in the scientific board to evolve Fraunhofer from a relatively unknown organization to the first ranked contract research institution in Europe. He transformed ICT into the leading German institute for propellants and explosives.

All members of the energetics community who knew him personally will never forget him and honor his memory forever. He will be missed indeed.
