Contact fatigue life estimation for asymmetric helical gear drives

The numerical model for an asymmetric helical gear is developed through analytical equations, and the contact fatigue life (CFL) is estimated based on the Basquin and Coffin-Manson method. Further, the numerically simulated CFL and bending fatigue life are validated with the experimental results based on the literature. By employing the proposed model, the significant asymmetric helical gear parameters of helix angle, gear ratio, teeth number, module, face width, pressure angle and coefficient of friction are estimated for customized power transmission by improving the CFL. Finally, it is revealed that an asymmetric helical gear exhibits enhanced CFL over symmetric helical gear.
