Early Bluebells are lavender

black-eyed Susans are gold

fluorescent light is sliced by curtains

and spills under doors.

The blood is so red

it names itself Red,

pools at the feet of bystanders

while a woman waits

in the breath of summer

unmoved by whirring fans.

Summer's body spackled by fireflies,

mouth full of cicadas,

their dirge-like drone

stopping and starting as a twisted tongue.

The guttural cry when

her anger breaks

and shatters on the floor.

Listen for the susurrations of trees

until they bare their empty hands,

hold something to remember

you will not last forever,

hold something when cold and bundled bodies

fill the beds which fill the hallways.

Walk fast, especially when

you have nowhere to go.

Become another body eating breakfast,

become another body that does not want so much:

a figure wading

through late afternoons smeared dark.

Build a home

in this snow

so when it is spring

the flowers can be color,

a fresh collar for the season

to pick for no one.

look for the chaplain.

Find him on a bench

eating a sandwich

each bite wistful as a prayer.
