Optimized Method to Achieve 1-Hydroxy-5-aminotetrazole (HAT)

1-Benzyloxy-5-aminotetrazole was synthesized from the cyclization of O-benzylhydroxylamine and cyanogen azide and debenzylated by bubbling H2 gas with a suspended Pd/C catalyst to yield energetic 1-hydroxy-5-aminotetrazole (HAT) in a high yield of 64%. This novel synthetic route is an improvement over current literature procedures. The newly synthesized HAT’s purity was confirmed via 1H NMR, 13C NMR, infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analysis and its thermal decomposition temperature.
