Influence of the Surface Film (Third Body) on the Friction and Wear Process of Carbon-Fiber Composites

Abstract

The paper considers the process of friction of carbon-carbon-fiber composite materials (C/C-fiber composite) and investigates the formation of a film of wear products (third body) on the friction surface. The friction and wear tests of the composites are carried out in the temperature and pressure range typical for the operation of aircraft-braking systems and other highly loaded friction units. The friction surface of the material and the third body are investigated by scanning electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The influence of the presence of a third-body film and its thickness on the coefficient of friction and the intensity of material wear are estimated.
