Experimental Determination of Amount of Liquid Held by Surface of Structured Packing in Distillation Column

Abstract

The results of experimental determination of the amount of liquid on the walls of structured packing are presented. Using snap-off valves placed in the reflux line and in the line of heavy fraction drain from the column to the steam generator enables determination of the total amount of liquid staying between the valves at the moment of cut-off. With a preliminary calibration of the volumes between the snap-off valves and not included in the packing, it was possible to calculate the amount of liquid held by the packing for a given operation mode of the column. The surface of the packing known, it was possible to calculate the average thickness of the liquid film located on the walls of the packing.
