India’s journey has been bold, audacious and, at times, even tempestuous, but it has always been linked to the wider trends in the global order. From the very beginning, Indian policymakers wanted to carve a special role for their nation in the global polity. It is, therefore, imperative to assess Indian foreign policy over the past seven decades and to outline future challenges at a time when global order is passing through an unprecedented flux with structural, institutional and normative shifts, making it imperative for nations to be highly adaptive in their approach and policy frameworks. India’s rise has made it central to most of the conversations on global governance, and unlike in the past, there are some critical choices to be made.
