Since its inception the enigmatic and attractive nature of avant-garde animation has resided in both its seeming rejection of any overarching interpretation of the artwork per se and, ironically, the formulation of temporary understandings that come to the audience’s mind with every new viewing. The geometric and linear abstractions so prevalent in these works, when presented in sequence, generate a sense of ambiguity that demands new interpretations across time. Often remembered are the strands of vital force radiating from the drawn lines, geometric shapes or objects in motion, such that the audience frequently find themselves enticed by the possibilities of metamorphosis, unfolding in an almost mystical way. These strands of vital force both demonstrate the artist’s creative visual experimentation and constitute the narrative content, which is generally absent or vague.
