This article reconstructs and evaluates a debate between Robert B. Pippin and Slavoj Žižek over the proper interpretation of Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958), in relation to the philosophical project of G. W. F. Hegel. Pippin and Žižek are each leading contemporary scholars of Hegel, while each also shares an abiding interest in film.1 Both Pippin and Žižek agree that Hitchcock’s Vertigo exemplifies certain important Hegelian philosophical insights, with profound implications for the philosophical understanding of our contemporary world. Yet, as we will see, they disagree on the precise way in which these insights are to be borne out, as well as the precise implications for the contemporary moment that are to follow from them. Žižek has written about Vertigo again and again throughout his philosophical career, but most important for our purposes is his treatment of the film in his magnum opus Less than Nothing: Hegel and the Shadow of Dialectical Materialism (2012). Pippin offers a critique of Žižek’s reading of Vertigo as the conclusion of his extensive review of Less than Nothing, fittingly titled “Back to Hegel?” (2013), and later republished as a book chapter retitled “Slavoj Žižek’s Hegel” (2015). (Pippin would also publish a monograph The Philosophical Hitchcock: Vertigo and the Anxieties of Unknowingness (2017), though it does not substantively engage with Žižek’s reading.) The present paper is the first study to attempt to reconstruct and evaluate this debate, which stands to be of interest to those concerned with Hitchcock’s Vertigo, with Hegel’s philosophy, or with both.
