Features of the Impregnation of Four-Dimensional Frames in the Manufacture of Carbon–Carbon Composite Materials

Abstract

The porous structure of a four-dimensional carbon rod frame based on carbon fibers, assembled according to the 4D-L scheme and used to produce a carbon–carbon composite material, is investigated. The sizes of the inter-rod and intrarod pores of various types are determined or estimated. Some specific features of sequential repeated impregnations with coal tar pitch and subsequent carbonization, first of the carbon frame, and then of the composite blanks obtained as a result of compaction, both at atmospheric and high pressures, are studied. It is shown that in the absence of external pressure, capillary forces can ensure the filling of only the intrarod pores, while to fill the inter-rod pores, it is necessary to use a high pressure of up to 10 MPa with a sufficient duration of its application.
