four discourses in English and Czech, including the differences in the two “big” cultures, the position of English as a lingua franca, and the specific features of the two languages. Their observations also invite us to ponder the question whether non-Anglophone specialized discourses will become prey to the Anglophone discourse, as English is dominantly the lingua franca in academic and professional settings today. As a scholar of rhetoric, I believe the authors’ approach to specialized discourse from persuasion would lend value to scholars invested in discourse studies. Moreover, the book is reader-friendly, serving as excellent reading material with clear language and logic. The book is not only an incitement to the entire enterprise of classical rhetoric, but also a reminder that interdisciplinary study among rhetoric, discourse, and communication is prospective. If the book has a weakness, it is in the arrangement of Chapter 2, in which a comparative analysis of persuasive strategies across English and Czech discourses is given in advance and thus forms a certain overlapping with the following chapters. Dontcheva-Navratilova and her colleagues do not position their book as a comprehensive treatment of the topic but entertain the possibility for further research on persuasion in specialized discourse. Noting that approaching persuasion from a multimodal perspective is a promising vista for future research, the authors ask readers to look deep into the relationship between persuasion and multimodal discourse analysis.
