individuals to make themselves visible in the name of change allows for a more nuanced understanding of visibility politics as an inherently limited and limiting strategy. Thomsen extends the sexualities and place literature in her attention to the metronormative lens through which the lives of sexual minorities have largely been studied, challenging scholars in this field to acknowledge this predilection to produce a more robust and inclusive study of LGBTQ lives moving forward. Beyond academia, the author’s critique of visibility politics champions “taking on the cult of visibility” (p. 163) in other social movements to reexamine how a narrowed sense of authenticity restricts possibilities for change.
