Particle in cell simulations of the pulsed plasma sheath: Dependence on pulse parameters

The spatial and temporal evolution of the pulsed plasma sheath is simulated using the particle-in-cell method. The effects of pulse parameters such as the rise time, duration, and maximum voltage on the sheath characteristics are discussed. In addition, it is considered how the pulse parameters affect ion current density, and ion kinetic energy at the cathode surface. It is found that even in the absence of collisions, the pulse rise time can broaden the energy distribution of ions at the cathode surface and the ion energy distribution is determined by the ratio of the pulse duration to the rise time.
