The popular uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa 2010/2011 were a critical juncture not only for societies and politics in the region but also for intraregional and transregional migration flows. Notably, the early days of the so-called “Arab Spring” were characterized by the return of formerly exiled opposition players as well as second-generation emigrants for whom the protest-driven regimes changes and the fall of dictators like Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in Tunisia, Hosni Mubarak in Egypt, Muammar al-Ghaddafi in Libya and Ali Abdullah Saleh in Yemen signaled an opportunity to return home and personally contribute to the new post-autocratic societies. But as protest gave way to counter-revolution and civil war, this trend was soon reversed by the exodus of many protagonists of the revolutions and the displacement of large numbers of refugees. In this context, Arab migrants have often been portrayed as the passive victims of geostrategic power dynamics and the machinations of autocratic regimes.

(Dana M. Moss)
