Catalytic Conversion of Methanol and Straight-Run Gasoline over Granulated Catalysts with Different Concentrations of H-Form ZSM-5 Zeolite

Abstract

Two granulated zeolite samples were synthesized and tested: a binder-containing (at least 20 wt %) ZSM-5 in the H-form and a high-crystallinity (at least 95 wt %) H-form ZSM-5 with a hierarchical porous structure. The catalytic properties of these samples were comparatively assessed, for the first time, in processes for the conversion of methanol and straight-run gasoline into high-octane components of engine fuels. The granulated zeolites prepared by different methods were found to differ in the content of the zeolite phase, the concentration of acid sites, and the porous properties. The study demonstrated the effects of the acid and structural properties of the zeolite samples on their activity, molecular sieve selectivity, and stability in the above-mentioned catalytic processes. In terms of catalytic properties, the hierarchical porous granulated zeolite proved to be superior to the binder-containing zeolite prepared by a conventional technique. Furthermore, the hierarchical porous catalyst showed a longer service life in methanol conversion. In the upgrading of straight-run gasoline, this catalyst enables the production of motor gasoline in compliance with applicable standards at lower reaction temperatures.
