Determination of reservoir rock typing using integrating geological and petrophysical methods in one of the oil field in south-west of Iran

Determining rock type is one of the most important steps in identifying and zoning a reservoir. In this study, by combining different geological (thin section), petrophysical (well log) and reservoir (core derived porosity and permeability) data, reservoir rock types were determined in one of the fields in southwestern Iran. In this study, in the first step, based on the sedimentological studies, 12 microfacies have been identified and categorized in 7 paleo-environments, then used MRGC algorithm on the well log data which resulted in extraction of 23 petrophysical rock types (PRTs); the merging of electrofacies with similar properties led to identification of 7 electrofacies with individual properties. In the next step, reservoir rock types (RRTs) were determined based on pore throat properties and reservoir quality index; in this way, using the Winland equation, the pore throat radius was estimated and associated with reservoir quality index (based on core porosity and permeability data) and it was fed to the MRGC algorithm for reservoir rock types’ determination. Finally, seven reservoir rock types and their connection with electrofacies and geological facies were determined in the Fahliyan reservoir.
