Introduction
Approximately 20 years ago, a paper published in the Journal of Gerontology suggested that most new graduates and virtually all practicing nurses received inadequate preparation in geriatrics. The authors of the study wrote: “Ensuring geriatric competency in specialty nurses offers an opportunity to make substantial inroads into ‘gerontologicalizing’ practicing nurses” (Mezey & Fulmer, 2002, p. M440). To that end, an initiative was launched to prepare practicing nurses and RNs with geriatrics competency. A few years later, the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) developed the text for the first edition of the Geriatric Nursing Review Syllabus: A Core Curriculum in Advanced Practice Geriatric Nursing (GNRS) (Resnick et al., 2022).
The new seventh edition, GNRS7, is based on the Geriatrics Review Syllabus: A Core Curriculum in Geriatric Medicine, 11th edition (Harper et al., 2022), and adapted for advanced practice geriatric nurses.
The GNRS7 comprises 72 chapters and is available in print and digital formats. The GNRS7 is divided into six sections: Current Issues in Aging, Approach to the Patient, Care Systems, Syndromes, Psychiatry, and Diseases and Disorders. The GNRS7 highlights developments in geriatric nursing since publication of the previous edition in 2019. The GNRS7 has been enhanced with five new chapters: Psychology of Aging, Advance Care Planning, Healthy Aging, Home-Based Medical Care, and Telehealth. Also included within several chapters are discussions about the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 (given that COVID-19–related data are continually evolving, readers are asked to refer to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for latest guidelines and information).
In addition, the GNRS7 includes 144 case-oriented, multiple-choice questions with answers, critiques, and references providing an effective, valuable self-assessment and study tool.
The GNRS7 Digital Edition includes website links throughout the content as well as DOI and PMID links in the chapter and question references. Links were all accessed at the time of publication. See geriatricscareonline.org for more information on GNRS7 digital packages.
