Freezing injury is one of the most critical climatic factors impacting pomegranate development and productivity. The goal of this study was not only to assess the freezing tolerance of 20 pomegranate varieties from various parts of Iran but also to look into a possible link between freezing tolerance and tree and fruit traits, as well as geographic and meteorologic factors. Freezing tolerance was measured using the LT50 (the lethal temperature at which 50% of electrolytic leakage occurs and 50% of tissue dies) method. The results showed large differences in freezing tolerance (−15.33 °C to −24.36 °C) among the studied pomegranate cultivars and can be classified as cold sensitive (−15.33 °C to −18.66 °C), intermediate (−19.23 °C to −22 °C), and winter hardy (−22.56 °C to −24.36 °C). Based on the data obtained, the freezing tolerance of pomegranate correlated well with some tree and fruit characteristics, such as chilling for the start of bud break (r = 0.63), seed toughness (r = −0.63), and pH of fruit juice (r = 0.38). Moreover, the results showed that the freezing tolerance of pomegranate was related to some geographic and climatic parameters occurring in the natural habitats of the studied cultivars, including mean wind speed (r = 0.36) and longitude (r = 0.39). The study revealed that the high variations in freezing tolerance among Iranian pomegranates should be considered in further breeding programs and in the selection of cultivars for neighboring regions and other regions with colder climates. To this end, useful correlations between frost tolerance, environmental factors of original locations, and other tree and fruit characteristics could be used as indirect indicators.

使用 LT50(发生 50% 电解泄漏和 50% 组织死亡时的致死温度)方法测量冷冻耐受性。
