Abstract

The influence of a drilling fluid on the physicomechanical properties of commercial rubbers of two types (RTD-1, RTD-2), which are used as stator coatings for downhole drilling motors, is studied. Prolonged (60 days) contact with a drilling fluid at 25°C is found to increase the stiffness and the coefficient of mechanic loss of rubber. The stability of the properties of RTD-1 rubber during operation in contact with a drilling fluid is shown to be higher than that of RTD-2 rubber. At 80°C, the elastic–hysteresis properties of the rubbers of both types have deteriorated by 30–50%.
