Abstract:

This essay analyzes the Disney+ 2021 series WandaVision through the lens of adaptation dramaturgy (or adapturgy), asking, "Why this witch now?" With a focus on US American popular tropes of witches, including the Salem witch trials and The Wizard of Oz, the essay examines how the series resonated with fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the general public in the immediate aftermath of the Capitol insurrection on January 6th. Whether viewers ultimately consider Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) the villain or hero of the series depends largely on how they view her interactions with Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Agatha/Agnes (Kathryn Hahn). Because WandaVision highlights and unravels the threads of Wanda's grief and its ties to her power as the Scarlet Witch, her story has striking parallels with audiences in the wake of the global pandemic and racial reckonings of 2020–21.
