Social markers and dimensions of meaning

William Salmon

Recent studies such as Eckert (2019) have called for greater cooperation between sociolinguists and those working in semantics and pragmatics in exploration of linguistic meaning. This present study considers three Labovian (1972) social markers—ain't, (ING) and negative concord—and finds that elements of these markers pattern as semantic but non-truth conditional Grice (1975) conventional implicatures. The study goes on to show that this conventional implicature meaning can be leaned upon further to convey non-semantic conversational implicatures, which speaks to the well-known malleability of social meaning across contexts.
