Kinetic study of crosslinking between acetoacetoxy and hexamethylene diamine functionalized waterborne latexes in two-pack systems

A kinetic study of the crosslinking reaction between waterborne polymer particles functionalized with aceto acetoxy ethyl methacrylate (AAEMA) and polymer particles functionalized with hexamethylene diamine (HMDA) is presented. Seeded emulsion polymerization is used to synthesize the polymer particles and the crosslinking reaction is followed during the film formation of the two-pack system. The kinetics of reaction with respect to time and temperature are studied using FTIR spectroscopy and rheological measurements, and the effects of crosslinking are also analysed by tensile strength and water absorption test. It is found that room temperature crosslinking occurs, as previously suggested in the literature, but at relatively slow rates. On the other hand, the annealing at 60 °C enhances considerably such crosslinking reactions, leading to fully interparticle crosslinked systems with improved mechanical and chemical resistance properties.
