Maternity Leave: Policy and Practice by Victoria Gordon and Beth M. Rauhaus examines maternity leave from legal, political, social, institutional, organizational, and personal perspectives. While there are four categories of family-friendly benefits, as identified by Mulvaney (2014), (1) dependent work, (2) flexible work arrangements, (3) leave programs, and (4) work-family stress management, this book focuses only on maternity leave. The book provides a history of maternity leave and childbearing in the workplace, closely examining the perceptions of women as they navigate the workforce and have children. Moreover, it investigates whether these perceptions match organizational policies. This is an increasingly important topic in an age of COVID-19, where parents have more burdensome childcare responsibilities and face added concerns regarding their children’s health and safety. The authors argue that while great changes have occurred over the decades, organizational cultures and informal norms discriminate against both men and women who make use of maternity leave. The book provides innumerable material for public personnel students and scholars learning about this understudied area.
