Capacity development for Indonesian scientists in fish life history studies is critical to provide a workforce to generate accurate scientific information to support reliable stock assessments and sustainable fisheries management. The “Specialist Training in Histology-based Reproductive Analysis of Tropical Fishes” was a training course from July 21 to August 12, 2021, held at the Maritime and Marine Science Center of Excellence at Pattimura University in Ambon, Maluku, Indonesia led by instructors from the University of Hawaii. The purpose of the training was to instruct eight Indonesian participants in a set of scientific skills that would allow them to proceed from the initial steps of planning to collect fish specimens through processing and examining gonadal tissue and counting fish eggs to the final stage of statistical analysis to generate reproductive life history parameters from the specimen data that they collected. Participants had positive responses about their experiences and the results generated from the training were used to inform fisheries managers in the Maluku province about size at maturity, spawning seasonality, sex ratios, and fecundity at size for two coastal pelagic species and two coral reef species.
