Background: The usage of deproteinized bovine bone in sinus augmentation has been evaluated and demonstrated previously however no study has been done on the potential effect of bone substitutes in combination with PRF. In this study we aimed to histologically evaluate combination effect of bone allograft and PRF.
Aim/Hypothesis: The aim of this study was to histologically evaluate and compare outcomes of sinus floor elevation using allograft bone particles with or without platelet rich fibrin (PRF).
Material and Methods: 20 patients in need of maxillary sinus augmentation using the lateral approach at implant department of Mashhad Dental School were selected for this study. Randomization was done with block randomization method. For the test group, sinus floor elevation was performed using PRF combined with bone allograft and in the control group the procedure was done with the usage of bone allograft alone. After 6 months, bone biopsies were obtained from the grafted posterior maxilla, and un-decalcified ground sections were prepared. Bone characteristics were evaluated using histological observation and histomorphometric analyses. Specifically, histomorphometric dimensions of newly formed bone, bone marrow and remaining particles were evaluated.
Results: 20 patients who were randomly divided into two groups of test and control completed the study. The mean of newly formed bone was 43.25 ± 5.22 percent in the test group and 38.25 ± 7.01 percent in control group and the mean of new bone marrow in the test group was 6.81 ± 2.19 percent and in the control group was 10.23 ± 4.49 percent and the mean of remaining particles was 9.35 ± 3.43 percent in test group and 13.18 ± 3.67 percent in the control group. Also, the variables were examined using the Independent Sample Test, which showed for the bone marrow and remaining graft particles variables the difference between the two groups were significant (p < 0.05).
