Hicks et al unpack the tenets of clinical care in the US through the lens of the physician-patient relationship. They compared participants with eye problems that reported being White and not Hispanic with the rest of the study population. Their research team determined that this historically excluded population of individuals identified in the dataset as Black, Hispanic, or other race were less likely to report “always” being treated with respect and more likely to be “always” asked about their opinions or beliefs about their medical care of treatment. I support the authors’ conclusion that these data may lead us along the path to health equity, but how?
