ABSTRACT

The current study investigates the impact of interactive visualization of scientific data in COVID-19 news on audiences’ fear arousal, perceived threat, and preventive intentions. An experiment compared the interactive and non-interactive versions of a news story that visualized big data of the rapid spread of coronavirus (N = 153). Results showed that interactive visualization evoked more intense fear arousal, which led to higher levels of perceived threat of COVID-19 and preventive intentions against the virus. Participants with higher conservatism were more susceptible to this effect, even after controlling for their maladaptive perceptions that downplay the threat of the pandemic.
