Effect of lubricant selection on the wear characteristics of spur gear under oil-air mixed lubrication

The helicopter transmission system generally employs oil injection lubrication, while the tooth surface often operates under mixed lubrication. In the case of mixed lubrication, the relationship among the fluid flow, rough contact, and material wear renders it quite difficult to establish a predictive model for wear and lubrication coupling. The present study involved, in consideration of the effect of tooth surface micro-morphology, establishing a coupling analysis model for the wear characteristics of involute gear mixed lubrication. The effects of the mixture of squalane base oil and 15% (by weight) polyisoprene(SQL+PIP), polyalphaolefin oil (PAO6) and mineral SN100 on the distribution of lubrication performance parameters and the wear characteristics were analyzed. The results revealed that the film thickness of SQL+PIP was higher than that of PAO6 and SN100, and the coefficient of friction is lower. In addition, the increase in lubricant viscosity was conducive to reducing the contact area and load ratios of direct rough contact, which was, in turn, beneficial to reducing wear.
