Two phase nanofluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in smooth horizontal tube installed by twisted tapes with alternate axes of rotation

Use of twisted tape inside the tube is a critical passive technique to enhance the heat transfer. In this technique axis of rotation of twisted tape plays a key role in heat transfer enhancement. The present work deals a turbulent, steady state and 3D Al2O3/water nanofluid flow through tube with twisted tapes. Different schematic of twisted tapes in term of their axis of rotation inside the tube is considered. Two phase model of governing equations in mixture form with turbulence effect is considered for the solution. RNG k-ε turbulent model has been taken to capture turbulent effect. The novelty in the present work is to find the effect of alternate axes of rotation of twisted tape inside the tube along with Al2O3 nanoparticle on heat transfer and pressure drop. When compared with one twisted tape inside the tube at Re = 13,000 and ϕ = 1%, further maximum increment of 5.1% and 10.5% in average Nusselt number is obtained for the case of two and three twisted tape having alternate axis of rotation. A maximum of 41% of increment in pressure drop at Re = 33,000 and 1% is obtained for three twisted tape with alternate axis of rotation.
