Approximation of the Separation Boundary in Water-Hydrotrope-Oil Ternary Systems

In this work, we studied the water-2-butoxyethanol-toluene, water-methanol-chloroform, and water-methanol-dichloromethane ternary systems. The position of the separation boundary was experimentally determined and approximated by various functions. We elucidated the major factors hindering satisfactory approximation of separation boundaries by empirical functions with a small number of adjustable parameters. The approximation of separation boundaries in ternary systems can be carried out using polynomial and smoothing spline functions with error comparable to experimental uncertainty.
