Effect of delay time between mixing and compacting for producing nuclear fuel plates

ABSTRACT

Nuclear fuel elements used in research reactors are mostly plate-type fuel elements. The core of the fuel plate contains uranium compound particles dispersed in an aluminum powder matrix. In the case of the Egyptian second research reactor (ETRR2) the uranium compound is U3O8. The powders mixing step is very crucial. The quality of the dispersion fuel is significantly dependent upon the homogeneity of the mixture. The mixed powders should be compacted within a few hours of the mixing process. However, it can happen that a longer time elapses between mixing and compaction, which may adversely affect the homogeneity of the produced fuel plates. The present work addresses this case. The uniformity of U3O8 distribution in the plates was examined using X-ray radiography. The results showed that the effect of even a relatively long delay time, up to 11 days, was moderate and did not cause the homogeneity of the plates to go outside the accepted range in this industry. This can be attributed to the precautions taken during the storage and handling of U3O8-Al mixed powder.
