Changes in the osprey Pandion haliaetus hunting grounds caused by water level fluctuations and the importance of shallow water areas in dam environment

Dam construction has created habitats and spawning or breeding grounds for fish, aquatic birds, and various other organisms. It is, therefore, necessary to identify dam conditions that are environmentally beneficial and stable for organisms, while basic dam functions, such as flood control and water utilization, are performed. This is achieved by monitoring the actual utilization of dams by various organisms; however, information on the utilization of dams by birds remains limited. This study examined the hunting sites of ospreys (Pandion haliaetus), the top predators in a dam ecosystem, and compared the environmental characteristics at these sites and at random sites. Ospreys hunted selectively in shallow areas of the reservoir and changed hunting grounds when there were water level fluctuations. In addition, some of the preferred shallow areas were created from sedimentation from rivers. These results show that shallow dam sites are important for ospreys. Furthermore, sedimentation, an undesirable factor in dam management, created hunting grounds for ospreys and, thus, should be considered in dam management decisions for maintaining the habitat and ecosystem for this species.
