Explorers and travelers might use a compass to determine their geographic location and navigate through unknown territories. It turns out that plants use a molecular COMPASS (COMplex of Proteins ASsociated with Set1) to navigate development during vegetative and reproductive growth via interaction with the chromatin remodeling complex INO80. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the INO80 complex plays roles in photomorphogenesis and the floral transition (Zhang et al., 2015). Although it is one of the major chromatin remodeling complexes in eukaryotes, the composition and molecular function of accessory subunits of the INO80 complex in plants remain to be determined. In this issue, Ji-Yun Shang and coworkers (Shang et al., 2021) show that a subclass of COMPASS histone H3K4 methyltransferase complexes functions as a module of INO80 and play a role in regulating its activity in Arabidopsis.
