Key Features
  • The Alberta Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Survivor Study is the first population-based cohort created to comprehensively assess the risk of late effects in AYA cancer survivors aged 15–39 years at diagnosis in Canada.
  • The cohort was formed in collaboration with the Alberta Cancer Registry using data on all AYA first primary malignant neoplasms diagnosed in Alberta between January 1983 and December 2017 (N = 24 459). We included a nested clinical cohort to investigate the association between treatment exposures and late effects for individuals diagnosed from 2000 onwards (N = 14 372).
  • Using deterministic data linkage, subsequent primary cancers and vital status information was obtained for the entire cohort; and 75.5–99.1% of the cohort appeared in the administrative health databases that record hospitalizations, ambulatory care, physician claims, perinatal health and patient-reported outcomes.
  • The results from this study will inform clinical care and tertiary prevention strategies seeking to improve physical health, well-being and survivorship care in this population.
