In a refreshing departure from usual ethnographic accounts of refugee camps, The Migrant Diaries, by Lynne Jones, is made up of the author's diary entries from five years of working with refugees in Italy, Greece, France, and Mexico interspersed with narratives from migrant children. Through painstakingly detailed diary entries and migrant accounts, Jones brings three-dimensionality to a crisis often treated with broad strokes. This book's strength lies in Jones's descriptions of the failures of nongovernmental organization (NGO)- and state-led humanitarianism. She shows how migrants and independent volunteers in refugee camps in Italy, Greece, and France filled the gaps left by professional organizations, creating schools, libraries, food distribution programs, and family centers. Jones's exploration of this independent and decentralized response to the refugee crisis suggests that humanitarian work should perhaps not be left to professional institutions. Each person, she argues, is capable of offering care and support, even in dire circumstances.
