Discovery of a glucosylgalactose phosphorylase: Although the rapidly expanding sequence space offers excellent opportunities for the discovery of novel enzymes, its rational exploration is key to the effective localization of regions for which no functional information is available. We have applied a binary approach that leverages the strengths of phylogeny and sequence similarity networks and which led to the discovery of the novel 4-O-β-d-glucosyl-d-galactose phosphorylase.
