On the influence of thermo-mechanical process history on stress corrosion cracking of solution annealed type 304 stainless steel

The effect of thermo-mechanical process history on microstructure development and stress corrosion cracking behavior of solution annealed Type 304 stainless steel has been investigated. Metallographic screening and electron backscatter diffraction analysis has been carried out to characterize microstructure after thermo-mechanical processing treatments. The application of cold reductions between 5% and 20%, followed by solution annealing treatments, resulted in different microstructure characteristics. Mixed-mode trans-/intergranular stress corrosion fractures were observed, and heat treatment at 950 °C resulted in changes of failure mode to predominantly transgranular. Fractographic assessment of the different themo-mechanical process conditions revealed a relationship between Grain Size (ASTM GS), Grain Boundary Character Distribution (GBCD), and Time to Failure (tf).
