Diamidophosphate (DAP) is a dinitrogenous derivative of orthophosphate with demonstrated prebiotic phosphorylation capabilities in aqueous medium. The ability of DAP to facilitate phosphorylation-mediated transformation of a range of abiotic and biotic molecules warrants a deeper scrutiny of: (a) its plausible geochemical provenance on the early Earth, (b) its prospects for synthetic and bioorganic chemistry applications, and (c) its potential role in transforming various classes of molecules leading to systems with emergent properties capable of exhibiting life-like behavior (synthetic biology).
