Abstract

A technique is described and analysis of radioactive nanoaerosols formed during heating of spherical simulators of fuel elements for high-temperature gas-cooled reactors in helium to 1500 K has been carried out. It was found that upon high-temperature gas corrosion and leakage of radioactive fission products from fuel elements, nanoaerosols of graphite with iodine and tellurium isotopes can be formed. More than 80% of their γ-activity is accounted for by particles ranging in size from 0.002 to 0.5 μm. Their filtration by highly efficient fiberglass and membrane cermet filters with multilayer and regenerable nanostructure at increased temperatures has been studied.
