Preparation and structural, microstructural, and electrical properties of Ce0.83Sm0.085Pr0.085O2-δ electrolyte material

Ce0.8Sm0.2O2-δ (SDC), Ce0.8Pr0.2O2-δ (PDC), and Ce0.83Sm0.085Pr0.085O2-δ (SPDC) samples were synthesized through a low-combustion sol-gel process modified using sucrose and pectin. Rietveld refinement of the samples' powder X-ray diffraction patterns showed a single phase with a cubic structure. Transmission electron microscopy images showed a particle size of around 23–38 nm, and these results were close to the average crystallite size calculated from Williamson-Hall plots. Morphology images were obtained by field-emission scanning electron microscopy; the results showed the samples’ dense surface with distinct grains. The solid solution and oxygen vacancies of the SPDC, SDC, and PDC samples were analyzed by means of the Raman spectra. The SPDC sample exhibited higher total electrical conductivity (2.63 × 10−2 S/cm at 600 °C) and lower activation energy (0.68 eV) than the SDC sample (9.95 × 10−3 S/cm at 600 °C and 0.82 eV) and the PDC sample (7.99 × 10−3 S/cm at 600 °C and 0.85 eV). The ionic and electronic transference numbers of the SPDC sample were 0.90 and 0.10, respectively, at 500 °C.
