Dear Readers,

Team spirit is an essential quality required for success in any scientific discipline, and our team of Executive Committee (ExCo) members and in-house editors at EJI were thankful for a positive esprit de corps more than ever during the past year. Beyond working tirelessly to ensure we maintain the quality of published articles [1], we teamed up and gathered globally renowned experts in various fields of immunology with one aim: to honor EJI's 50th Anniversary and join forces to prepare our 50th Anniversary special collection [2]. As already mentioned in our previous editorial, the 50th Anniversary review series features the most impactful topics in both basic and clinical immunology. Just at the time when we were finalizing the publication of the first reviews, we were extremely saddened to hear that our ExCo member Anca Catrina had passed away after a long-term struggle with severe illness [3]. We express our sincere condolences to her family and colleagues and our gratitude to Anca for all of her contributions to EJI. She will be greatly missed in our team. We also owe big thanks to ExCo members Maria Yazdanbakhsh and Wenjun Ouyang, who have given an important signature to the 50th Anniversary series. Finally, we are indebted to the series Authors for their enthusiasm to join us for this journey. We are proud of our joint efforts reflected in the series content and we invite you to explore the published 50th Anniversary Review Collection. You will discover a variety of topics, regardless of your field of research. The readers may also find answers to the questions they have been looking for or even get inspired to start a new line of research!

While the year 2020 is behind us, the ongoing pandemic continues to pose challenges for our global research community, especially those of us with small children. COVID-19 pandemics and lockdowns have negatively impacted primarily female scientists [4] and we could clearly witness this while preparing the 50th Anniversary Collection. Although a number of female authors and key opinion leaders contributed to the current series, several lead female immunologists, despite initial enthusiasm to contribute, were finally not able to, since their regular daily roles as lab heads have suddenly switched to full time child-care and home schooling. We are nonetheless grateful for discussing review ideas with these researchers and fully understand the challenges the current times present.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the international community of immunologists has been incredibly creative and collaborative. These trying times have shown us the importance of national and cross-national collaboration for publishing top articles in highly evolving field of coronavirus research [5-8]. We are very pleased with the COVID-19 articles published in EJI, and are excited to see that EJI's COVID-19 content continues to grow and has already received much attention; judging by the our top downloaded articles every month. We want to thank our authors and referees for working with us to rapidly disseminate COVID-19 research!

The current COVID-19 pandemic is not the only EJI content receiving attention. A seminal study published in EJI in 1993 [9] that set the stage for development of mRNA COVID-19 vaccination platforms, is as of recent in the limelight judging by its high Altmetric score. This revival is truly no wonder – the study by Martinon et al. indeed is one of the pioneering studies that suggested the high potential of liposome-encapsulated mRNA technology for vaccination by demonstrating the capacity of mRNA- containing liposomes to elicit CTL responses in vivo. Almost 30 years after this discovery the initial assumption of Meulien and collegues can't be more true! In retrospect, the very words of authors ‘’The interest of this novel approach lies in the ease of preparing mRNA-containing liposomes in comparison with the time-consuming task of identifying CTL epitopes or the isolation of enough pure viral protein’’ were a vision of future and have together with the work of other researchers in the field announced a revolution in the field of vaccine research that we continue to witness.

Another big reward to our team came with this year's impact factor (IF) announcement. We are more than happy to see that 2020 IF is 5.532 and has shown a 26% increase compared to the previous! We want to thank our dedicated authors, referees, Editorial Board members and our Executive committee for their hard work and contribution to this incredible achievement and we would also like to thank our global community of readers for their continued support. We will remain committed to publish significant studies that advance the field and not only those that are perceived as trendy or popular research. EJI will continue to serve the needs of our authors and readers around the globe and cover high-quality basic, clinical, and translational research.

Finally, we would like to entice you with what is coming next and announce that we have teamed-up with our global community of authors and are currently preparing the third edition of the Flow cytometry guidelines. The first and the second editions are still our most read articles [10, 11] and continue to prove that Guidelines are a valuable resource for many immunologists.

And before we close and ask you for your precious feedback, we would like to announce that you can follow us on our recently launched Twitter account and use this venue to hear about our recently published articles and developments in the Journal!
