We would like to correct the authors’ interpretation of ‘Preoperative intravenous iron to treat anaemia before major abdominal surgery (PREVENTT): a randomised, double-blind, controlled trial’ [2] in their introduction. As baseline iron studies were not routinely assessed in the UK [3] iron studies were performed at randomisation. Overall, 82% of patients had iron deficiency anaemia and these results were reported as per the statistical analysis plan in the predefined subgroup analysis. Analysis by baseline iron deficiency showed no meaningful difference in terms of the patient outcomes of the trial.
