Gene mutation detection and identification are conducive for detection of disease. He, Sunil and team report the electronic characteristics of the gene of breast cancer 1 in four common mutation types: duplication, single nucleotide variation, deletion and indel. The HOMO (left) and HOMO-1 (right) distribution for TCACAAGCA (above) and TCACXAGCA (below) explain the largest decrease in conductance upon deletion of an AT base pair. Each mutation shows a distinct change in conductance which can be used to identify the mutation. The results open up a new possibility for designing an efficient and low-cost sensor for electronically detecting DNA mutations. (DOI: 10.1002/bip.23465)
